History & Heritage

Sir Richard Levinge was Solicitor General for Ireland, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons, and Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. He bought land across Westmeath in 1702 and 1703 and was created a baronet of High Park in October 1704. His descendants built Knockdrin Castle outside Mullingar and held it until 1946. The family motto — Vestigia nulla retrorsum, no footsteps backwards — has followed the name ever since.
