Longfield is a County Cork name, bound for the better part of three centuries to an estate near Cloyne that took its name from a wife rather than a husband. This premium heritage woven blanket honors the Longfield family crest against the Irish National Tartan.

History & Heritage

John Longfield acquired land near Cloyne and renamed it Castle Mary after Mary Hawnby of Mallow, the heiress he married in 1685. The family became one of the leading Anglo-Irish houses of County Cork. His grandson Richard was created Viscount Longueville in 1800 and, dying without an heir, left the estates to his cousin Mountifort Longfield, who sat as a member of parliament for Cork for forty-two years. By the 1870s the two branches held close to twenty thousand acres between Cork and Limerick. Castle Mary was burned in 1920, and the family monument in the south transept of Cloyne Cathedral is now the fullest record left of them. A later Longfield, Cynthia, made a name of her own as an entomologist and traveler.
