The Story Behind the Design
The O'Mahon name is a Gaelic Irish surname of considerable historical standing, the family one of the great dynasties of Thomond — the ancient kingdom of north Munster that produced the O'Brien high kings. O'Mathghamhna in Irish — from mathghamhan, meaning bear — the Mahons were a branch of the Dal Cais royal family, kings of Corcu Baiscinn in west Clare and lords of a significant territory in County Clare and County Tipperary. Brian Boru himself was a Dal Cais king, and the Mahon family name connects directly to that extraordinary royal lineage. History & Heritage
The O'Mahons were lords of Corcu Baiscinn in west Clare, a territory along the Atlantic coast of the county that includes the Cliffs of Moher and the Loop Head peninsula. Their connection to the Dal Cais dynasty made them kinsmen of the O'Briens and participants in the political world of Thomond through the medieval period. The Mahon name spread beyond its Clare heartland to County Cork and other Munster counties, and today it is one of the more widespread Munster surnames, found across the province and throughout the Irish diaspora worldwide.
