They were part of the MacCarthy world of Munster, operating within the political sphere of the MacCarthy Mór dynasty while maintaining their own territorial identity. The O'Mahony name spread widely across Cork and Munster and is today one of the most common surnames in the province, found wherever Cork families settled through the centuries of emigration. Father Connél O’Mahony, the seventeenth-century Jesuit priest from west Cork, was among the most celebrated bearers of the name in the Counter-Reformation era.
