The Story Behind the Design
The McDonagh name in Ireland is a Gaelic Irish surname — Mac Donnchadha in Irish, son of Donnchad, a personal name meaning brown warrior — found principally in County Galway and the Connacht region, the family a branch of the great MacDermot dynasty of Roscommon who established themselves in County Galway as lords of Tirerrill and parts of Sligo. The McDonaghs were a distinguished family of the Connacht Gaelic world, their territory in the landscape of east Galway and south Roscommon part of the broader MacDermot heritage. History & Heritage
The McDonagh families were part of the same extended dynasty as the MacDermots, both descending from the kings of Moylurg. Their territory in County Galway made them part of the complex political world of Connacht, neighbours and sometimes rivals to the O’Kellys and the other great Connacht dynasties. The McDonagh name today is particularly associated with County Galway and the west of Ireland, and it is found throughout the Connacht diaspora wherever families from these counties settled through the centuries of emigration.
