The Story Behind the Design
The McQuillan name in Ireland is a Gaelic surname of Scottish origin — Mac Uibhilín in Irish, a Gaelicisation of the Norman name de Mandeville — the family lords of the Route, the fertile plain of north County Antrim between the River Bann and the Glens of Antrim. The McQuillans were one of the most powerful families of medieval Antrim, their territory encompassing some of the most dramatic coastline in Ireland, from the chalk cliffs above Ballycastle to the lowlands along the Bann estuary. This Irish woven blanket features the McQuillan family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring the lords of the Route in County Antrim.
History & Heritage
The McQuillan lords of the Route held power in north Antrim through the medieval period, their territory the landscape of the north Antrim coast that today draws visitors from around the world to the Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede, and the ruins of Dunseverick Castle. By the sixteenth century, the rising power of the MacDonnells of the Glens had displaced the McQuillans from their dominant position, and the family declined in political significance. Their name, however, survived and is found today in north Antrim and throughout the Ulster diaspora wherever Antrim families settled.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the McQuillan family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
