The Story Behind the Design

The O'Meara name is a Gaelic Irish surname with a distinguished heritage in County Tipperary and the Thomond region, the family hereditary physicians to the O'Kennedy lords of Ormond — one of the most honoured roles in the Gaelic learned class. O'Méara in Irish, the Meara families held their hereditary medical tradition in the barony of Lower Ormond in north Tipperary, their knowledge of medicine and healing passing from generation to generation as part of the great professional families of medieval Gaelic Ireland. This Irish woven blanket features the O'Meara family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a County Tipperary heritage of extraordinary depth.

History & Heritage

The hereditary physicians of Gaelic Ireland — the liaigh families — held their knowledge as a family inheritance, their medical schools passing their learning across generations in a tradition that predated the Norman arrival and survived it for centuries. The O'Mearas of Tipperary served the O'Kennedy lords of Ormond in this capacity, their territory in the north of the county placing them at the heart of the political and cultural life of the province. Dermot O’Meara, the seventeenth-century Tipperary physician and author of Pathologia Hereditaria Generalis, was among the most distinguished members of this learned tradition, his medical writings one of the last expressions of the Gaelic scholarly heritage.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O'Meara family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
