The Story Behind the Design

The O’Nolan name is a Gaelic Irish surname — O’Núallagáin in Irish, from a personal name meaning champion or celebrated one — found principally in County Carlow and the south Leinster counties, the family one of the leading Gaelic dynasties of south Leinster. The O’Nolans were lords of Fórtha, a territory in County Carlow, and they appear throughout the medieval annals as a family of real local standing in the Gaelic world of Leinster. This Irish woven blanket features the O’Nolan family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring a County Carlow Gaelic heritage.

History & Heritage

The O’Nolan lords of Fórtha held their territory in County Carlow through the medieval period, part of the complex Gaelic world of south Leinster that included the Kavanaghs, the Kinsellas, and the other great families of the south-east. Their name is among the most distinguished in County Carlow’s history, and it spread across Leinster and Munster over the centuries. Brian O’Nolan — the twentieth-century Dublin writer who published under the pen names Flann O’Brien and Myles na gCopaleen — was among the most celebrated bearers of this name, his novels At Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman among the masterpieces of Irish literature.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the O’Nolan family crest and the Irish National Tartan integrated into the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
