The Story Behind the Design

The Nugent name in Ireland is a Norman-Irish surname of considerable historical standing — de Nogent in its original form, from the place name Nogent in Normandy — the family establishing themselves as Barons of Delvin in County Westmeath, one of the significant Norman baronies of the Irish midlands. The Nugents of Delvin became thoroughly embedded in the Gaelic and Catholic life of the province over the centuries, speaking Irish and intermarrying with the great Gaelic families of Meath and Westmeath. This Irish woven blanket features the Nugent family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of the great Norman-Irish families of the midlands.

History & Heritage

The Nugent Barons of Delvin were one of the most interesting of the great Norman-Irish families — becoming thoroughly Gaelicised over the medieval centuries while retaining their Norman title and much of their original estate. Christopher Nugent, fourteenth Baron Delvin, who died in 1602, was a notable Irish poet who wrote in the Irish language and compiled an Irish grammar for the use of Queen Elizabeth I, a remarkable artefact of the cultural complexity of the late Elizabethan era. The Nugent name today is associated particularly with County Westmeath and the Irish midlands.

Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Nugent family crest and the Irish National Tartan formed within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
