The Story Behind the Design
The Plunkett name in Ireland is a Norman-Irish surname associated with County Meath and the eastern counties of Leinster, one of the great Anglo-Norman families who became thoroughly integrated into Irish life across the medieval centuries. The Plunketts rose to become Barons of Killeen and Barons of Dunsany, holding estates in County Meath that endured through the centuries of change from the medieval period to the present day. This Irish woven blanket features the Plunkett family crest against the Irish National Tartan, honouring one of Ireland’s most distinguished Norman-Irish families.
History & Heritage
The Plunkett family is most celebrated in Irish history through Saint Oliver Plunkett — born in 1629 at Loughcrew, County Meath — who served as Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland during the Restoration period. Arrested on a fabricated charge of treason in the hysteria of the so-called Popish Plot, he was tried in London, convicted, and hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in 1681, becoming the last Catholic martyr to die in England. He was canonised in 1975. His head is preserved at Saint Peter’s Church in Drogheda, County Louth. The Plunkett name carries that extraordinary heritage of faith and sacrifice.
Craftsmanship
This blanket is woven from premium cotton yarn — the Plunkett family crest and the Irish National Tartan created within the textile structure during weaving, not applied to the surface. Consistent woven depth on both sides, a soft and substantial feel, and traditional fringed edges complete the piece correctly.
