The Story Behind the Design
The Prendergast name arrived in Ireland with the Normans in 1169 and never left — becoming, over centuries, as Irish as the landscape it settled in. This woven blanket honours that long and layered heritage, featuring the Prendergast family crest and the Irish National Tartan in a piece of lasting textile craft.
The Prendergast Name
De la Roche de Prendergast in its original Norman form, the Prendergast family were among the earliest and most significant of the Anglo-Norman settlers in Ireland. Maurice de Prendergast came to Ireland with Strongbow in 1169, receiving lands in County Wexford and County Waterford for his part in the conquest. Over the following centuries the Prendergasts became thoroughly Gaelicised, intermarrying with the native Irish aristocracy and adopting Irish customs and culture. They established themselves as a major family in Wexford and Tipperary, their name surviving as a distinctive mark of that earliest Norman settlement. In Connacht, the name sometimes appears as Mac Piarais (Pearce), reflecting further Gaelicisation of the family line.
