They became one of the most thoroughly Gaelicised of all the Norman-Irish families, intermarrying with the native Irish aristocracy and adopting Irish customs, culture, and language over generations. The Roches of Wexford and the Roches of Cork were two distinct branches, both deeply integrated into the fabric of Irish provincial life. By the late medieval period the family were counted among the leading gentry of Munster, their name as natural to the Irish landscape as the limestone it referenced.
