The Story Behind the Design

The Roche name came to Ireland with the Normans in the twelfth century and never left — becoming, through marriage and time, as deeply Irish as the soil of Wexford and Cork it settled in. This woven blanket honours that rich Norman-Irish heritage through the Roche family crest and the distinctive tones of the Irish National Tartan.

The Roche Name

De la Roche in its original Norman French form — from roche, meaning rock, a toponymic surname common across Normandy — the Roche family came to Ireland with the Cambro-Norman invasion of 1169, receiving lands in County Wexford and later spreading into Cork, Limerick, and Kerry. They became one of the most thoroughly Gaelicised of all the Norman-Irish families, intermarrying with the native Irish aristocracy and adopting Irish customs, culture, and language over generations. The Roches of Wexford and the Roches of Cork were two distinct branches, both deeply integrated into the fabric of Irish provincial life. By the late medieval period the family were counted among the leading gentry of Munster, their name as natural to the Irish landscape as the limestone it referenced.

Woven Craftsmanship

This blanket is woven on a loom, not printed. The Roche crest and Irish tartan design are integral to the textile itself — built into every thread, giving the piece its visible depth, texture, and lasting durability. Premium cotton yarn and traditional fringed edges complete the heirloom-quality finish.
