The Savage name in Ireland carries a Norman-Irish heritage rooted in the Ards Peninsula of County Down — a family that became, over centuries, as thoroughly Ulster Irish as any Gaelic sept in the province. This woven blanket honours that long-established heritage through the Savage family crest and the rich tones of the Irish National Tartan.
The Savage Name
From the Anglo-Norman le Sauvage — meaning wild or untamed, a common Norman nickname surname — the Savage family came to Ulster in the wake of the Anglo-Norman settlement of the twelfth century. John de Savage received lands in the Ards Peninsula of County Down, and the family established themselves so thoroughly in east Ulster that they became virtually indistinguishable from the Gaelic Irish over subsequent generations. The Savages of the Ards held their territory through the medieval period, their name appearing consistently in the Ulster annals and ecclesiastical records. They produced churchmen, soldiers, and civic leaders, and are among the oldest established settler families in Ulster. By the time of the plantation era the Savages were as much of Ulster as the landscape itself.
