The Story Behind the Design
The Taaffe name carries the heritage of one of Ireland’s most distinguished Norman-Irish families — a surname woven into the political and military history of the island for over eight centuries. The Taaffe Name
From the Welsh Taf — a place-name origin brought to Ireland via the Norman settlement — the Taaffe family established themselves in County Louth and County Meath in the wake of the Norman conquest of 1169. Over the following centuries they became one of the great Old English Catholic families of the Pale, holding their faith and their lands through the upheavals of the Reformation and Cromwellian era. The Taaffes produced the Viscounts Taaffe, a notable Irish peerage family, and supplied soldiers and statesmen to both Ireland and the Catholic powers of Europe. Field Marshal Franz Moritz von Taaffe served in the armies of the Habsburg Empire, one of the many Taaffe descendants who carried the family’s martial tradition into the Wild Geese tradition of Continental service.
