The Story Behind the Design
The Talbot name is one of the great Norman-Irish surnames of Leinster — a family of immense historical significance in medieval Ireland, whose name appears at the very highest levels of Irish and English governance for three centuries. This woven blanket honours that remarkable heritage through the Talbot family crest and the Irish National Tartan.
The Talbot Name
From the Norman Talebot — possibly from a Germanic personal name meaning to destroy or to command — the Talbot family came to Ireland with the Anglo-Norman settlement and rose to extraordinary prominence. Richard Talbot, created Earl of Shrewsbury, was one of the most powerful figures in fifteenth-century England and Ireland. His brother John Talbot served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Most significantly for Irish history, Richard Talbot, created Earl of Tyrconnell by James II, was Lord Deputy of Ireland in the Jacobite period of the 1680s and early 1690s, a central figure in the last great struggle of Catholic Ireland against the Williamite settlement. The Talbots of County Dublin remained a significant Pale gentry family through the centuries, their name embedded in the landscape of north County Dublin to this day.
