Hugh Tyrrell, Baron of Castleknock, was among the original Norman grantees of the Dublin region. In the early seventeenth century, Captain Richard Tyrrell distinguished himself as one of the most effective Gaelic-allied commanders in the Nine Years’ War against Elizabeth I, fighting alongside the O’Neill in several major engagements. The name endures today across Meath, Westmeath, and the wider Leinster tradition.
