The Story Behind the Design
The Tyrrell name is one of the oldest and most distinguished Norman-Irish surnames in Leinster — a family whose presence in Ireland predates the Magna Carta and whose history touches some of the most dramatic moments in Irish and English medieval affairs. This woven blanket honours that heritage through the Tyrrell family crest and the Irish National Tartan.
The Tyrrell Name
From the Norman Tirel or Tyrrell — possibly from tirel, meaning to pull, a name associated with falconry — the Tyrrell family came to Ireland with the Anglo-Norman settlement of the late twelfth century. They received lands in County Meath and County Westmeath, establishing themselves as one of the significant baronial families of the midlands Pale. The Tyrrells of Castleknock and the Tyrrells of County Westmeath were two major branches, both of considerable standing in medieval Ireland. Hugh Tyrrell, Baron of Castleknock, was among the original Norman grantees of the Dublin region. In the early seventeenth century, Captain Richard Tyrrell distinguished himself as one of the most effective Gaelic-allied commanders in the Nine Years’ War against Elizabeth I, fighting alongside the O’Neill in several major engagements. The name endures today across Meath, Westmeath, and the wider Leinster tradition.
Woven Craftsmanship
Not printed — woven. The Tyrrell crest and tartan design are integral to the textile structure, built into every thread. Premium cotton yarn and traditional fringed edges complete the heirloom finish.
