The Walker name was made by hand — waulkers were the craftsmen who finished Scotland’s woollen cloth, a trade important enough that Edinburgh chartered a Craft of Waulkers around 1500. There’s a rightness, then, to a finely made keepsake: the Walker family crest on a tartan background, set in a polished silver frame for the tree.

In the Highlands the name was Mac an Fhucadair, “son of the fuller,” and Walkers of Argyll have long been counted with the Stewarts of Appin. The family motto, Cura et Industria — “Care and Industry” — applies equally well to good cloth and to good Christmases.
